YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY GAY RIGHTS ORGANIZATION

-

This year's first meeting of the Gay Rights Organization of Youngstown State University will be held Wednesday night, October 8 in room 240 of Kilcawley Student Center. (Future meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, alternately at night and in the afternoon.) The main topic will be the refusal of the Student Council to fund the GRO for this year. While all Student Council funding received an across the board cut last spring, in a clearly discriminatory action, two days before the end of school the council refused to fund the GRO and the Women's and Men's Liberation Organizations. The administration has taken a passive stance; not helping and not hindering (except for accepting the prejudicial act of the student council). The officers of the GRO are investigating possible plans of action to be discussed at the meeting.

During the past year and a quarter of its existence the Youngstown Gay Rights Organization has worked together for civil rights of all gay people. One project has been to enhance the gay information section of the Youngstown State University Library. They have also polled this year's mayoral candidates and have deavored to provide a social and political alternative to the bars. This year the GRO in cooperation with the Women's Liberation Organization and the Men's Liberation Organization had planned a human sexuality workshop week, but that is now in doubt since funding has been denied to all three organizations.

The Youngstown Gay Rights Organization is still in its organizational stages but they have already set up a speaker's panel and are in the process of organizing a peer counseling service.

Throughout northern and central Ohio the spotlight DOES shine on the campus organizations where gay men and women have been working together. Not only are they the dominant force in our fight for gay rights, they are also offering viable alternatives to the bar culture for students and nonstudents alike.

(This article by no means covers all the gay campus organizations in northern and central Ohio. Other groups will be profiled in future issues. If you have information about other campus groups send it to High Gear P.O. Box 6177 Cleveland, Ohio 44101.)

On Saturday, October 4th, Akron Gay Alliance held its fourth meeting and set down some aims and functions of their newly formed organization. Primarily, AGA is to be an educational service and resource center for the Akron area. Soon to be created will be

a lending library and resource center of books, magazines and pamphlets. The group will also serve as an outreach into the community by providing speakers for churches and civil groups and by presenting gay educational programs and public forums with gay panels. Eventually, AGA hopes the outreach will reach into the public high schools where they can establish a dialogue with teachers and counselors to remove

their misconceptions about gays. Also, they would like to sit down with the administrations and evaluate textbooks for health, sociology and psychology classes.

In providing an educational service, AGA hopes to create its own sense of community and promote sisterhood and brotherhood among its members. This growing together will be further facilitated by possible rap sessions and consciousness raising groups.

A separate but affiliated organization, The University of Akron Gay Alliance, is also being formed. U of A Gay Alliance and AGA will work closely together maintaining their own autonomy.

Founder Mike Anderson decided to form AGA because "as a gay person, I feel more than a deep need to be involved in liberation, to help educate non-gays, to eliminate false stereotypes and remove the burdens of shame and bigotry in society. I think it can be done in a positive and creative way."

Meetings are scheduled for every Saturday from 4 to 6. Every other Saturday, starting with the October 4 meeting, will be held at Humanity House on W. Market in Akron. For more information you can call 745-8469 or write P.O. Box 651, Barberton, Ohio 44203.
